About resource recovery
Businesses that supply single-use and/or rechargeable batteries into Ontario are required to meet resource recovery requirements as outlined in the Batteries Regulation. By law, battery producers must report every year on the weight of batteries they supply into Ontario, and how they met the resource recovery requirements.
For more information about producer responsibility for batteries, visit RPRA’s batteries program page.
Types of data reported:
- Batteries supplied into Ontario: The weight of obligated batteries supplied into Ontario reported by producers.
- Producer-reported recovery: The weight of recovered resources reported by producers.
- Recovery rate requirement: The percent of batteries that producers are required to recover in a year, determined using a three-year rolling average of supplied weight.
- Recovery requirement: The weight of batteries producers are required to recycle, reuse or refurbish in a given year.
- Recovery requirement reductions: Reductions to the overall recovery requirement as determined by the producer-reported weight of post-consumer recycled content (content that was recovered from products or packaging after use by consumers) contained in batteries.
This webpage displays producer-reported recovery data only. Collection and recovery data reported to RPRA by producer responsibility organizations (PROs) and service providers (e.g., processors) is available in a downloadable Excel report. The totals reflect different reporting scopes: producers report recovery for which they are accountable, PROs report all recovery they coordinate, and processors report recovery at their facilities, including tonnes that producers or PROs may not obtain. These totals may therefore differ.
Batteries supplied into Ontario
Obligated producers began reporting their annual supply of batteries into Ontario to RPRA in 2020.
The annual supply of single-use batteries is reported to RPRA the year after they are supplied, and the supply of rechargeable batteries is reported to RPRA two years after they are supplied.
Use the tabs to view supply by battery category. Single-use supply is available through 2025; rechargeable and all-batteries supply are available through 2024. All-batteries totals include only supply years for which both categories are available.

Batteries recovered
Producers of batteries are required to report the weight of recovered resources from processing batteries to RPRA annually. Recovering batteries means collecting end-of-life and/or discarded batteries and refurbishing them or breaking them down into their component parts or materials for recycling or reuse.
From the 2025 recovery year onward, the Batteries Regulation requires producers to meet one recovery requirement for all batteries, regardless of type. Previously, separate recovery requirements applied to single-use and rechargeable batteries.
Producer-reported recovery
The weight of batteries recovered is reported to RPRA the year after they were recovered.

Recovery rate requirements and producer-reported recovery rates
The chart compares recovery rate requirements, as outlined in the regulation, with producer-reported recovery rates. Requirements are shown separately for single-use and rechargeable batteries through 2024, and for all batteries from 2025 onward. The 2026 and 2027 points show requirements only; producer-reported recovery rates are not yet available.
The Batteries Regulation required producers to make “best efforts” to meet the 40% recovery rate requirements through the end of the 2022 performance period. From 2023 on, the regulation requires producers to meet their recovery requirements. Read the Registrar’s statement on the resolution of battery producers’ non-compliance with the 2023 and 2024 minimum management requirements.
Recovery requirement reductions
A producer’s recovery requirement can be reduced by up to 50% by the weight of post-consumer recycled content contained in batteries. Post-consumer recycled content is content that was recovered from products or packaging after use by consumers.
Recovery requirement reductions in tonnes
| Battery type | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-use | 4 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| Rechargeable | 36 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 59 | N/A |
The figures show reductions to recovery requirements, in tonnes, determined by the producer-reported weight of post-consumer recycled content contained in batteries. This content can reduce the overall recovery requirement by up to 50%.
