2022 Electronics, Tires and Blue Box resource recovery data now posted

RPRA has posted the latest resource recovery data for the electronics (also known as information technology and telecommunications/audio-visual equipment (ITT/AV)), tires and Blue Box programs.

Resource recovery is the collection and repair or recycling of end-of-life products or packaging.

RPRA reports on the following types of resource recovery data annually:

  • Supply: The amount of materials supplied into the Ontario market.
  • Recovery requirement: The tonnes of materials required to be recovered.
  • Recovery requirement reduction: Reduction to the recovery requirement as determined by the amount of materials supplied into Ontario that have extended warranties, contain recycled component material, or that were repairable. The reductions are calculated differently for each material. (For the recovery requirement reductions reported today, this is only applicable to electronics.)
  • Recovery rate: The total amount of materials recovered in the reporting year divided by the average of the annual amount of materials supplied into Ontario. (For the recovery rates reported today, tires is divided by a three-year rolling average and electronics is divided by a three-year rolling average, less any applicable reductions.)

Electronics

In 2022, producers recovered over 34,600 tonnes of electronics in Ontario. The 2022 resource recovery rate was 61.1%, down 0.4% compared to 2021. The 2022 rate is 6.1% over the 55% target outlined in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulation.

  • Electronics recovered in 2021 and 2022.
  • Recovery requirement reduction from 2021 to 2024.

Tires

In 2022, producers recovered over 143,400 tonnes of tires in Ontario. The 2022 resource recovery rate was 87.14%, up from 86.63% in 2021. The 2022 rate is 2.14% over the 85% target outlined in the Tires Regulation.

Blue Box

2022 supply data for Blue Box materials is now available on the Resource Recovery Reports webpage. 2024 will be the first year that producers of Blue Box materials, or producer responsibility organizations on their behalf, are required to report the amount of materials they recovered in 2023 to RPRA. Blue Box recovery data will be made available in 2024 after the reporting period.
