Clay County Resource Recovery Centre in Minnesota sends old mattresses to a different county for recycling

The Clay County Resource Recovery Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, is finding creative ways to deal with old mattresses, which are challenging to manage in landfills because they don’t compact well. Clay County has started a program to transport these mattresses to Becker County, which has a mattress recycling program. The county bought a semi-trailer to haul a truckload of mattresses each month. From July 1 to July 23, 125 mattresses were received, with an annual intake estimated at 1,000. Becker County works with the nonprofit Better Futures Minnesota to dismantle and separate mattress materials for resale. The costs of hauling and recycling are covered by Clay County’s $16 mattress drop-off fee. Read more about the Clay Country Resource Recovery Centre’s mattress recycling program.
