The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India has recently published the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries. The rules are an updated form of the draft rules that were published in 2020 and replace the previous Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, published in 2001. They cover all types of batteries and function based on the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), where the producers, including importers, of batteries are responsible for the collection, recycling, and refurbishment of waste batteries.
