Researchers at the University of Birmingham have developed a method to upcycle end-of-life battery waste into materials suitable for next-generation battery cathodes. The team used recovered material from end-of-life electric vehicle batteries to synthesize compounds with a disordered rocksalt structure, seen as a promising alternative for higher energy density rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The researchers aim to upcycle battery components as electric vehicle batteries reach the end of their lives, contributing to the development of high-performance batteries for the transition to zero emissions.
