Authority Taking Action to Address Ontario Tire Stewardship Governance
The Authority is taking action to address Ontario Tire Stewardship’s (OTS) governance following the resignation of the OTS board of directors. OTS is the organization responsible for overseeing the province’s used tires recycling program.
In a letter to the Authority dated September 18, 2017, directors of the OTS board provided notification of their resignation. The resignations have resulted in a loss of quorum on the OTS board.
The Authority is currently reviewing options to address OTS’ governance, including the appointment of an administrator to supervise the running and eventual wind up of the organization.
Section 43 of the Waste Diversion Transition Act, 2016 authorizes the Authority to appoint an individual as an administrator to assume responsibility for the activities of an industry funding organization if there are not enough members on the board of directors to form a quorum for the transaction of business.
The Authority is currently engaged with OTS staff and is confident of the ongoing smooth operations of Ontario’s used tires recycling program. The committed and professional staff of OTS responsible for the day-to-day activities of OTS will ensure the program continues to meet the needs of consumers and service providers while the Authority takes action to address OTS’ governance.
