Robert Poirier Elected Chair of the Authority’s Board of Directors

The Authority is pleased to announce the election of Robert Poirier as Chair of the Authority’s Board of Directors effective June 24, 2020.

Mr. Poirier’s election as Chair comes after Glenda Gies resigned as Chair of the Authority’s Board. Ms. Gies also resigned from the Board effective July 1.

“I want to thank Glenda for her service as Chair of the Authority. Under her diligent leadership, the Board of Directors has served with distinction as they supervised the Authority’s operations and supported the Province of Ontario’s efforts to raise diversion rates, grow a circular economy and transition Ontario’s recycling framework to full producer responsibility,” said Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Ms. Gies has served as Chair of the Authority’s Board of Directors since the Authority was first established on November 30, 2016.

“Leading the Authority through its inaugural years, during which the Authority established its key compliance function and Registry, transitioned its first legacy waste diversion program to the new individual producer regulatory framework, and cultivated a professional and high performing organizational culture, has been a privilege,” said Ms. Gies.

Mr. Poirier was first elected director to the Authority’s Board on November 1, 2017. He is also Chair of the Toronto Port Authority, and a director of Metrolinx, where he also serves on two industry committees. Previously, he served as a senior advisor to members of the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce from 1992 until 1999.

“Glenda’s strategic and focused leadership, breadth of experience, and unparalleled operational and technical knowledge of waste diversion and resource recovery have been critical to the Authority’s successes to date. My colleagues on the Authority’s Board and I are sad to receive her resignation but are prepared to continue building on the solid foundation Glenda’s leadership has contributed to establishing at the Authority,” said Mr. Poirier.
