Indonesian startup recycles plastic into eco-bricks
Today is World Oceans Day, an annual global awareness day to celebrate the importance of the oceans and to better understand how to interact with them in a sustainable manner.
ReBricks is a startup formed by two Indonesian women who are taking on the challenge of diverting mountains of plastic waste in Jakarta. The two entrepreneurs took action when Indonesia drew headlines as the second-biggest producer of marine waste in the world. They began soliciting plastic waste from various stalls and shop owners, where they mulch the plastics into tiny flakes. The plastic flakes are mixed with cement and sand and then moulded into blocks. Their innovation has resulted in eco-bricks that are stronger than conventional bricks but cost the same price. Learn more about the company and their efforts in reducing plastic waste in the ocean.
