3 things to consider as we move towards Lithium-Ion battery recycling
As we move toward lithium-ion battery power, there are three things around recycling these batteries that we need to consider – how fast can we keep up with demand, is there enough infrastructure, and the necessity to take a holistic approach when recycling. As businesses continue to use lithium-ion batteries in personal electronics, and electric vehicles, recyclers are realizing that they may not be equipped to handle this particular battery type. Companies such as Canadian battery recycler Li-Cycle is developing infrastructure to accommodate extracting the recyclable metals from batteries at their Canadian facility. They are also considering logistics and transportation issues around sourcing and end-of-life processes to minimize carbon emissions. Read about the considerations toward a circular economy for lithium-ion batteries.
