Sign up for RPRA’s webinar on the Hazardous Waste Program Registry

This post was updated on June 10, 2022, to reflect the addition of two new webinar dates

During the week of June 27, the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) is hosting three webinars on the Hazardous Waste Program (HWP) Registry for generators, carriers, and receivers of industrial hazardous or liquid waste.

RPRA will provide an update on the development of the registry and a demo of the features built to date. The info sessions will also:

  • present information about the potential for businesses to incorporate data from their internal digital systems into the registry
  • outline what future users can expect leading up to the launch, including training and learning materials,
  • and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions about the transition to the registry.

These webinars are part of a  series of information sessions for future registry users focused on training and guidance. The sessions will support obligated parties to use the system ahead of the registry launch in the winter.

HWP Registry webinar dates:

Space is limited and will be granted on a first come first served basis. We will be posting presentation slides and webinar recordings from all three sessions to our website for those who are unable to attend. We will also be posting FAQs coming out of the webinars.

Regulatory amendments finalized

Amendments to Ontario Regulation 347: General – Waste Management requiring obligated parties to report through RPRA’s HWP Registry instead of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Park’s HWIN (Hazardous Waste Information Network) system starting January 1, 2023, were finalized in April. Regulated parties will also be required to use the registry’s electronic manifesting system instead of paper manifests. Read more.

RPRA is responsible for building and maintaining the registry and supporting its users. The ministry will continue to oversee the Hazardous Waste Program and be responsible for compliance and enforcement activities.

Building the registry’s manifesting system

The build of the HWP Registry is on schedule. RPRA is now focused on building the manifesting system, the second main component of the registry, which will include a tracking and reporting functionality and a mobile app to support waste manifests.

Features of the manifesting system that are currently being built include:

  • creating, editing, and completing manifests
  • reporting hazardous waste from emergency situations
  • configuration of the mobile app and third-party system integration

Use of the new registry, including the manifesting system, will be required as of January 1, 2023. Users will be able to set up their registry accounts, including facility and waste stream information, in advance of that date so they are prepared to meet their reporting requirements starting January 1. More details about accessing and using the new system will be provided closer to that date.
