Scientists combat holiday packaging waste by upcycling cardboard into a Styrofoam alterative to cushion items
Researchers have developed a sustainable alternative to traditional molded cushioning materials, such as Styrofoam, using cardboard waste. The team broke down cardboard scraps in a blender to create a pulp, which was then mixed with gelatin or polyvinyl acetate glue. The mixtures were poured into molds, refrigerated, and freeze-dried to form cushioning foams. The resulting paper-based foams demonstrated good thermal insulation and strong energy absorption, outperforming some plastic foams. The researchers also created a heavy-duty version of the cardboard-based foam that withstood hits from a hammer, indicating potential use in force-intensive deliveries.
