Eleven circular economy startups break the $1 billion dollar value mark and achieve ‘unicorn status’
Since 2020, 11 startups with circular economy business models have achieved unicorn status—in other words, have been valued at over $1 billion. These startups are innovating in various sectors, including fashion, consumer electronics, and food production, adopting circular principles to reduce waste, pollution, and environmental impact. Examples include Vinted and Vestiaire Collective in fashion, BackMarket in consumer electronics, and Apeel in fresh produce. The startups are pushing beyond basic recycling concepts, however are facing challenges due to the lack of the standardized measurement and reporting required to compete effectively.
