SK Chemicals, Hyosung Advanced Materials, and Hankook Tire & Technology have developed and commercialized South Korea’s first tire that uses chemically recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The tire, called iON, is designed exclusively for electric vehicles (EVs) and incorporates circular recycled PET fiber tire cords. The tire, with 45% sustainable material content, has passed reliability verification by a European automotive manufacturer and received final approval for use. The companies aim to lead the tire industry’s sustainable management by expanding the application of eco-friendly materials, with a goal to use 100% sustainable materials in all tires by 2050.
