The New Jersey state Legislature is considering the Beverage Container Deposit Act, which mandates the use of returnable beverage containers and introduces an incentive program to promote recycling. The bill was introduced to the Senate and referred to the Senate Environment and Energy Committee on May 6. The bill would require every beverage container sold in the state to be returnable and carry a 10-cent refund value two years after enactment. Containers would need to be clearly marked with the state’s name and the refund value, encouraging consumers to return them for reuse or proper disposal.
