The City of Frederick, Maryland, has initiated a residential compost pilot project involving more than 1,100 residents that has diverted over 574,670 pounds of organic waste from landfills. The program began in June 2022 in specific areas before expanding city-wide in August 2023. Participation is free for households receiving trash collection, and those not covered can compost through Key City Compost, a local composting service, for a small monthly fee. The initiative addresses the significant portion of municipal solid waste composed of organic materials, which contribute to methane emissions in landfills.
