EV battery recycling process shows promise for circular economy

Mercedes-Benz has opened the first European facility integrating mechanical-hydrometallurgical battery recycling, achieving a recovery rate of over 96%. Located in Kuppenheim, the plant processes 2,500 tonnes annually, extracting valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, and lithium from used batteries. These materials will be used to produce new battery modules for electric vehicles. The project is supported by the German government and three universities, marking a significant step towards a sustainable circular economy in the automotive industry.
