Kenyan brothers found company that uses old newspapers to make pencils
MOMO Pencils, based in Athi River, Machakos County, is addressing deforestation by creating pencils from recycled newspapers instead of wood. Founded by brothers Mahamud and Rashid Omari, the company uses locally sourced glue and newspapers, importing only graphite. The process involves collecting old newspapers, cutting them to size, adding graphite, compressing them into pencil shapes, drying, and packaging the finished product. The brothers’ aim is to supply pencils to every child in Kenya within five years, and encourage tree planting through their initiative. Learn more.
