Carbon Upcycling CEO speaks to advancing circular economy in heavy industry with innovative solutions

A close up of carbon rocks

Carbon Upcycling, a Calgary-based company, is pioneering circular decarbonization solutions for hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel, and mining. Their technology transforms industrial byproducts like steel slags, coal ash, and mineral tailings, into low carbon materials by chemically activating them with CO2. This process captures carbon and creates blended cement, reducing emissions by up to two-thirds compared to conventional methods. Recently, Carbon Upcycling secured a funding round co-led by BDC Capital’s Climate Tech Fund and Climate Investment, aiming to scale their technology further. They have partnered with major industry players, including cement producer, CRH, to build a full-scale carbon-to-value plant integrated with Canada’s largest cement facility in Mississauga. This initiative seeks to provide cost-effective, low-carbon alternatives without necessitating changes in existing construction practices, thereby facilitating the industry’s transition towards a circular economy.
