Closed Loop proposes enhancements for small-format recycling

A report by Closed Loop Partners highlights how upgrading U.S. recycling facilities could help capture tens of thousands of tons of small-format plastics like bottle caps and pill bottles, which are typically lost in sorting processes. The study, conducted with Circular Services and backed by major brands like Maybelline and P&G, found that equipment upgrades—such as improved sorting screens—can significantly reduce contamination and increase recovery. With sufficient investment, these materials could be collected at scale, helping companies meet recycling goals. To advance this, Closed Loop Partners launched the Consortium to Recover Small-Format Packaging, aiming to improve and scale recycling solutions. Currently, most small-format plastics go directly to landfills due to inadequate infrastructure. However, with strategic investments, they could enter the secondary commodities market, diverting massive amounts from waste. The initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to improve sustainability and develop innovative sorting technologies. Learn more about this report.
