Trash trapping program removes over 100,000 pieces of plastic in 2024

The PortsToronto, University of Toronto Trash Team, and Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy partners collaborated to combat plastic pollution in the Toronto Harbour. Between May and October 2024, trash traps diverted over 600 kg of debris, including plastic pellets, foam, cigarette butts, and microplastics. The Trash Trapping Program, active since 2019, utilizes WasteSharks, Seabins, LittaTraps, and manual skimming to collect and analyze waste, informing solutions-based research. In 2025, PortsToronto plans to expand the initiative by installing additional trash traps and training new researchers. These efforts aim to improve water cleanliness and reduce marine litter along Toronto’s waterfront. Learn more about this effort.
