Indigenous-led efforts bolster recycling efforts in remote parts of Canada

Providing recycling access in British Columbia’s remote First Nations communities—many accessible only by barge or unpaved road—poses significant logistical challenges. To address these, the Indigenous Zero Waste Technical Advisory Group (IZWTAG) has partnered with the Stewardship Agencies of BC (SABC) to formally manage the First Nations Recycling Initiative. This program supports recycling education and collection events for items like electronics, large appliances, and hazardous waste. IZWTAG, an Indigenous-led organization, is known for its deep community ties and effective zero-waste training. The partnership aims to streamline recycling logistics and improve access by coordinating pickups for multiple waste streams, making efforts more efficient and cost-effective. IZWTAG also provides on-the-ground technical support and mobile depots, which are especially useful during harsh winters. President Calvin Jameson, a longtime advocate for Indigenous waste management, emphasizes composting and food sovereignty as key priorities. Together, IZWTAG and SABC are building sustainable, community-driven recycling solutions across BC. Learn more about this partnership.
