Global initiatives are tackling e-waste and sustainable industrialization

As global e-waste continues to rise, international efforts to promote a circular economy are gaining momentum. A recent partnership between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and tech leader Lenovo aims to address this crisis through responsible electronics management and sustainable industrialization. With e-waste projected to reach 82 million tons by 2030, and only 22.3% properly recycled in 2022, the need for action is urgent. The collaboration supports the use of recycled and bio-based materials in products and packaging and promotes the reuse of end-of-life electronics. Lenovo plans for all its PC products (excluding tablets and accessories) to include post-consumer recycled content by 2025/26. Other companies like Xiaomi and GEM are also advancing recycling efforts, with Xiaomi nearing its goal of recycling 38,000 tons of e-waste. These initiatives reflect a growing global shift toward circular solutions that protect both the environment and human health, while supporting green economic development.
