New recycling process can prevent valuable materials from ending up in landfills

small textiles

Aquafil has achieved a major breakthrough in textile recycling by developing the world’s first plant capable of chemically separating elastic fibers from nylon. This innovation, over a decade in the making, addresses a long-standing challenge in recycling blended fabrics, particularly in sportswear and swimwear. Partnering with Georgia Tech since 2013, Aquafil refined its technology, securing a crucial patent in 2022. The new process prevents valuable materials from ending up in landfills, enabling the recovery of nylon for reuse at its ECONYL® plant. Aquafil now aims to scale this innovation industrially, supported by strategic partnerships to secure post-use materials. This milestone underscores Aquafil’s leadership in sustainable solutions, reducing reliance on virgin resources and advancing the circular economy. Founded in 1965, Aquafil is a global leader in nylon production, with 19 facilities worldwide and a commitment to turning waste into high-quality regenerated materials.
