Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation diverted over 3,300 metric tonnes of gable top containers from landfills in 2023
Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) has improved recycling methods for gable top containers like milk and juice cartons. ABCRC diverted over 3,300 metric tonnes of these containers from landfills in 2023. Although these materials can’t be used to create new beverage containers, they can be repurposed effectively into other products. For instance, used milk cartons, once rinsed and returned to bottle depots, can be recycled into sustainable building materials. Most of these returned containers are sent to the U.S. and transformed into high-performance roofing materials, such as roof cover boards, which provide extra insulation and protection. Some of the recycled material is also used to make products like toilet paper and tissues. Read more about improved milk carton recycling.
