Alberta has started the regulatory process that will shift the cost of recycling away from municipalities and onto the companies that produce the items by releasing an extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulation. The regulation covers product packaging, single-use products, paper products, batteries, pesticides, most corrosive and flammable household products and their containers. The Albertan government expects the regulation to come into effect on November 30, 2022, and be fully operational by October 2026. Read how the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) will manage the system and ensure producers reach the required benchmarks.
