Australian product stewardship initiative upcycles single-use cups into construction materials
The Simply Cups program in Australia, a product stewardship initiative by Closed Loop, repurposes single-use paper coffee, ice-cream, and takeaway cups into asphalt and construction materials. This circular economy solution aims to save millions of cups from ending up in landfills. The program has a network of 1,500 collection locations across Australia, including 700 7-Eleven stores and 350 schools. The collected cups are processed to become beneficial additives in asphalt or components in lightweight concrete and concrete blocks, contributing to sustainable waste management and achieving Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets.
