Researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology have developed a method of diverting coffee waste from landfills by using it in construction projects instead. The process, dubbed pyrolysis, produces a residue from coffee grounds called biochar that can be used to replace sand in concrete production. Not only does the technique lead to stronger concrete, it is also more energy efficient because it uses lower-than-average temperatures to create biochar.
