College and university waste diversion program keeps 30 million pounds of waste out of landfills

The Campus Race to Zero Waste program, organized by the National Wildlife Federation and RecycleMania Inc., is celebrating its 2024 winners, recognizing 30 colleges and universities for their efforts in waste reduction and sustainability. Over 2.7 million students and staff from 150 campuses participated, diverting 30 million pounds of material, including 105 million single-use plastic containers, from landfills. The winners were awarded in various categories, highlighting achievements in waste reduction, recycling, and composting. Notable efforts included the University of Richmond’s diversion of 98% of scrap generated during a basketball game away from landfills through recycling and composting.
