As of February 2027, new traction batteries, two-wheeled vehicle batteries, and industrial batteries over 2 kWh marketed in the EU will require a digital battery passport. Developed by the Battery Pass Consortium, which includes the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, the passport aims to ensure transparency, sustainability, and encourage battery reuse. The passport will document a battery’s lifecycle from raw material extraction to recycling, containing data on sustainability, carbon footprint, materials, hazardous substances, and recyclability.
