Egypt’s informal recyclers backed by extended producer responsibility system

Cairo’s informal garbage recyclers referred to as zabbalean, currently collect 50-60% of Cairo’s waste.  Their main objective is to harvest materials, rather than manage waste by recycling 80% of everything they collect. With the help of a group of multinationals and the Egyptian government, these informal recyclers will be paid for their recycling collection under the new Extended Producer Responsibility system. Recyclers can track every item recycled, transaction, and payment electronically, offering multiple benefits to increasing their collection targets. Learn more.
