Enzyme-based recycling technology getting ready for commercialization

French startup company, Carbios, is attempting to commercialize a type of chemical recycling known as depolymerization. While traditional depolymerization relies on inorganic inputs, a key component of this company’s technology is less mainstream – the use of genetically modified enzymes. These plastic-eating microbes can efficiently and effectively break down polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics. Carbios has teamed up with some of the world’s largest consumer goods companies, such as L’Oréal, Nestlé, and PepsiCo, to manufacture proof-of-concept bottles with this enzyme-based technology.  Learn more.
