EU project developing innovative battery recycling technologies.

The BeyondBattRec project, led by Aalborg University, unites 12 partners across seven countries to develop innovative battery recycling technologies. Running from 2024 to 2028 with €7.45 million in funding from Horizon Europe, the project aims to recover 95% of critical metals like cobalt, nickel, and copper, reuse 70% of battery weight, and cut CO2 emissions by 50%. The initiative addresses Europe’s reliance on imported battery materials and limited recycling infrastructure. It focuses on new processes for sorting, dismantling, and reusing materials in new battery cells, supporting the European Green Deal’s goal of a sustainable, circular battery value chain.
