The European Union will soon require Digital Product Passports that track products from creation to disposal, improving transparency, traceability, and sustainability. Starting in 2027, the mandate will first apply to batteries and later to other industries, including electronics and information and communications technology. The aim is to reduce e-waste by ensuring products are designed to last longer, use resources more efficiently, and are easier to repair and recycle. The Digital Product Passports will help consumers make informed decisions by providing information on a product’s manufacturing, materials, and disposal. Businesses are being advised to prepare by appointing a Digital Product Passport lead who will understand the regulatory requirements and develop a comprehensive strategy.
