Grants help MRFs recover 31 million cans yearly

Grants from Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) and Crown Holdings are helping material recovery facilities (MRFs) in Alabama and California capture over 31 million aluminum beverage cans annually that would have otherwise been lost to landfills. These are the seventh and eighth grants in the Can Manufacturers Institute’s (CMI) can capture program, which has collectively funded equipment to recycle nearly 150 million cans each year. The grants provide revenue opportunities, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen the circular economy. Baldwin County, Alabama, is installing an eddy current separator, capturing 17.9 million additional cans annually. In Galt, California, Cal-Waste Recovery Systems is upgrading AI-based sorting technology to recover 13.5 million cans. CMI’s program addresses the issue of missorted cans, which account for up to 25% of recyclables lost in MRFs. These efforts ensure more aluminum cans are properly recycled, contributing to sustainability and economic benefits. Learn more about this initiative.
