Groundbreaking findings on small-format packaging recovery

Closed Loop Partners’ Center for the Circular Economy has released a report on recovering small-format plastic packaging, based on two years of research with Maybelline New York, L’Oréal Groupe, and other partners. The study demonstrates that upgrading recycling equipment—such as glass screens at materials recovery facilities (MRFs)—can significantly reduce plastic contamination and recover valuable materials. The findings highlight that many small plastics hold market value, existing technologies can be adapted for recovery, and targeted investments in recycling infrastructure are crucial. This research has led to the launch of the Consortium to Recover Small-Format Packaging, a cross-industry initiative aimed at scaling recycling solutions. The Center is now inviting partners to join efforts to improve recovery rates, reduce landfill waste, and enhance sustainability. Major brands, including Kraft Heinz and P&G, support the initiative, recognizing the potential environmental and economic benefits of increasing small-format packaging recycling.
