HaPlay GO Zero: Upcycled smartphone cyberdeck with postmarketOS

discarded cell phones

Pseudonymous maker mongkeelutfi has created a budget-friendly cyberdeck using an old Xiaomi Redmi 2 smartphone running postmarketOS instead of a Raspberry Pi. Dubbed the HaPlay GO Zero, this DIY device features a 3D-printed case, a touchscreen display, a battery-powered Bluetooth keyboard, and USB ports for expansion—all for just $42.91. Unlike standard Android, postmarketOS provides a full Linux desktop environment (KDE Plasma), making it a functional portable terminal. The build efficiently repurposes the smartphone’s existing battery, eliminating the need for a separate power system. The only minor flaw is a misplaced headphone jack hole, which mongkeelutfi acknowledges as an easy fix. Learn more about upcycling smartphones
