How using an AI-powered smart bin could improve recycling rates
In Australia, recycling rates are declining because plastic recycling is not correctly sorted. With this in mind, a team of researchers has designed a hi-tech “smart bin” that can sort recyclable items automatically. The Smart Bin is equipped with artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine vision to classify different types of waste, including glasses, metal cans and plastics. The device can even recognize different types of plastics using various sensors to sense the weight, matter, and materials meaning that recyclable items have a chance of being diverted from landfills.
