It is time for the focus to shift from recycling to reducing and reusing

Plastic packaging makes up 40% of global plastic waste, prompting governments and industries to rethink packaging practices. Driven by growing environmental concerns, regulations like the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Australia’s National Packaging Targets are pushing for more sustainable solutions. The EU PPWR, effective as of February 2025, sets uniform rules to reduce packaging materials, improve recyclability, and promote compostable alternatives. Australia’s targets go further, aiming for 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025 while eliminating unnecessary single-use plastics. Though these goals present challenges, companies are responding with innovative solutions—using biodegradable materials, improving recyclability, and introducing reusable and refillable packaging models. The shift aims to support a circular economy, reducing waste and resource use. As a result, the recycled materials packaging market is projected to reach $250 billion. Learn more about this strategy.
