Lagos implementing revolutionary plan for their waste management process

The Lagos State Government is advancing its waste management system by transitioning to a sustainable circular economy. With over 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily, the government has signed several MOUs to enhance waste collection, recycling, and conversion into energy and resources. Key initiatives include a Waste-to-Energy plant with Harvest Waste Consortium, a smelting plant for electronic waste, and a partnership with Lafarge Africa/Geocycle to manage non-recyclable waste. Efforts to ban Styrofoam and single-use plastics have resulted in significant confiscations and improved drainage. To maintain cleanliness, 15,000 street sweepers are deployed daily, and enforcement against environmental violations has intensified. Under the WASH initiative, the state is also constructing 400 new public toilets as part of its efforts for improved sanitation. These collective measures have helped bolster the state’s commitment to improved waste management and a circular economy in Lagos. Learn more about this plan.
