Mohawk College in Hamilton continues mask recycling program

Last summer, a student from Mohawk College in Hamilton suggested the college offer recycling of disposable masks. Eager to divert waste, the college bought zero-waste boxes from Terracycle, a company that specializes in recycling materials that aren’t accepted in blue-box pickup. The bulk of the masks are recycled into rigid plastic and used for decking and outdoor furniture, and the ear straps are used for playground resurfacing. Since starting the program, the college has recycled over 260,000 masks. Learn more.
