NASA launches initiative to minimize and process solid waste on the moon

NASA’s new LunaRecycle initiative seeks sustainable waste management solutions for long-term lunar missions under their Artemis Program. The goal is to design recycling systems for the moon’s surface and pressurized habitats to minimize and process solid waste, reducing the need to return waste to Earth. With some scientists warning that we are in a new “lunar anthropocene” where human activities may significantly impact the lunar environment, this effort aims to enhance the sustainability of future space exploration. Past moon missions have already left various items, including landers, flags, experiments, and even human waste, on the lunar surface. Read more about NASA’s LunaRecycle initiative.
