National standards will bring greater consistency to plastics recycling

In case you missed it, CSA Group published a National Standard of Canada, CSA R117:24, Plastics Recycling: Definitions, reporting, and measuring, to bring greater consistency to plastics recycling. Developed with support from the Standards Council of Canada and through a consensus-based process involving government officials, manufacturers, and recyclers, the standard is designed to help policymakers, municipalities, and industry establish a consistent definition of recycling. It also sets the specific calculation points for both chemical and mechanical recycling of plastics. By introducing consistent terminology and a standardized framework, CSA Group hopes to support more accurate reporting of recycling rates and improve understanding of plastics circularity. According to Michael Leering, Director, Environment & Business Excellence Standards at CSA Group, the initiative was part of the broader shift toward a circular economy and is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in recycling efforts across Canada.
