New recycling innovation can give farm plastics a second chance

Aduro Clean Technologies Inc. and Cleanfarms Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the use of Aduro’s Hydrochemolytic Technology (HCT) for recycling agricultural plastic waste in Canada. The partnership will assess the technical and economic feasibility of using HCT to process hard-to-recycle materials like silage film, bale wrap, and grain bags, which are often contaminated and lack end-of-life solutions. The collaboration will progress through three phases, starting with lab trials using unprocessed farm plastics, followed by pilot plant testing and process modeling, and potentially culminating in a demonstration plant. Cleanfarms, which operates under extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs and recovered 87% of small pesticide and fertilizer containers in 2023, will provide material samples and supply chain expertise. Both companies aim to reduce landfill use, promote resource recovery, and support circularity in agriculture through scalable chemical recycling solutions. Learn more about this process.
