New start-up helps universities keep takeout containers out of landfills

Every year, campuses generate enormous amounts of single-use packaging waste, primarily from takeout food. To reduce this environmental impact, a new digital container return system is showing promising results. By replacing traditional card-swap models with a QR-code-based platform, the program streamlines the borrowing and returning of durable food containers. Students sign up via a mobile app, scan containers at checkout and return them to designated bins—like checking out a library book. This tech-driven system encourages more sustainable choices without sacrificing convenience and has already diverted 21 tonnes of waste and saved over 84 tonnes of carbon emissions. The return rate has soared from 60% to over 96%, and some containers have been reused more than 200 times. Experts say real-time feedback from such systems helps users feel empowered, encouraging further eco-conscious decisions. As the model proves successful in institutional settings, its potential to expand into other sectors continues to grow. Learn more about this initiative.
