Newmarket launches pilot program for indoor food waste composting

The Town of Newmarket is launching a pilot program to reduce food waste by offering residents discounted Foodcycler composters. In partnership with Food Cycle Science, the initiative provides 100 machines that turn food waste into a dry, odourless fertilizer. The program aims to assess the feasibility of these indoor composters, particularly for homes without backyard composting space. Residents can purchase a 3.5-litre unit for $200 or a 5-litre unit for $300, both significantly discounted. Participants must track their usage over 12 weeks to help estimate waste diversion. The Foodcycler operates quietly, is odourless, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The pilot supports Newmarket’s environmental goals, and participants can keep their machines after the program.
