A pending packaging fee in Colorado designed to fund the expansion of recycling efforts could potentially double statewide diversions from landfills. The proposed producer responsibility fee aims to enhance recycling rates, with the highest-cost scenario requiring $290 million annually by 2035. The study estimates the current diversion rates at 22% to 28%, but the introduction of packaging fees could increase diversion to 47% to 54% (low-case scenario) and 54% to 60% (high-case scenario) by introducing curbside recycling in communities lacking the service. Read more about how this producer responsibility fee could help divert waste from landfills.
