Raising awareness of environmental issues, and promoting recycling through art

Pencil crayon shavings

Westbrook Walnut Grove High School sophomore Gao Vang created an artwork using over 1,000 recycled bottle caps and pop tabs to raise awareness about ocean pollution. The mural, depicting an ocean sunset and a leaping whale, was part of the YES! (Youth Eco Solutions) program, which encourages students to tackle environmental challenges through community projects. Vang, inspired by a former student’s idea, worked on the mural daily after school with the help of friends. The team experimented with materials and techniques, ultimately securing the bottle caps with screws and the pop tabs with epoxy. The completed piece will be displayed on a shed at WWG. Vang hopes the mural will inspire others to recycle and protect the environment while highlighting the power of teamwork and creativity. Learn more about this initiative.
