Reframing recycling – an economic opportunity instead of a challenge

In February 2025, the National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) rebranded as the Australian Resources Recovery Council (ARRC), marking a bold move to shift public and policymaker perception of the industry. Led by CEO Rick Ralph, ARRC aims to highlight the economic value of recycling, which contributes over 47,000 jobs and $7 billion to Australia’s economy. Ralph, a veteran of the sector, advocates reframing recycling as a strategic driver of economic growth and local manufacturing, not just waste management. At ReMA 2025, a global industry summit, ARRC engaged with leaders from countries like the US, China, and India to explore sustainable markets and trade challenges, including impacts from new US tariffs. Ralph stresses the need for a fresh national perspective, focusing on resource recovery as a tool for emissions reduction, supply chain strength, and sovereign capability. The council is leading by example to inspire systemic change and reinvigorate Australia’s recycling agenda. Learn more about this initiative.
