A new report by Biffa suggests that standardizing plastic packaging could significantly reduce the UK’s plastic waste. Standardization could divert up to 0.8 million metric tons of plastic waste from landfills by 2029. Simpler packaging formats would improve recycling efficiency, since multi-material packaging is difficult for consumers to sort. Standardizing packaging, like the uniform formats used for milk, cereal, and toothpaste, could make recycling more straightforward. Examples of successful reuse systems, such as refillable bottles and shared reusable containers, illustrate how standardization could work in practice.
