Scientists have developed a biodegradable printed circuit

Small circuit board connected to computer

A team of researchers from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley have developed a fully recyclable and biodegradable printed circuit. The circuits could divert wearable devices and other flexible electronics from landfills, mitigating the health and environmental hazards of metal waste leaching into the soil. The circuit contains biodegradable conductive ink and plastic material embedded with an enzyme that starts a series of decomposition when immersed in hot water. Learn more.
